After posting here about shredders a week or two back, I’ve been reading more about HIPAA and identity theft. I’m posting again because I just read an alarming article (Identity Theft and the Elderly) that said that seniors are more likely victims for identity theft because they usually have more disposable income and higher lines of credit than younger people.
Just when your parents thought they could relax and enjoy their golden years, they’ve got to be extra vigilant about protecting themselves from fraud!
So this Christmas I’m giving my mother a shredder. I’m looking at either the Fellowes Powershred PS-70 or the Martin Yale 1000SC. As I said before, I’ve got the GBC 960X Shredmaster for my home office. Although it is a sturdy shredder, I don’t think she
needs one this powerful.
Cost: The Powershred PS-70 costs about $150 and I’ve found the 1000SC for about the same price, so that can’t be the deciding factor.
Features: Both are strip-cut shredders that will shred the same media (paper clips, staples, credit cards, CDs), at about the same volume (about 10 sheets per pass for both).
Quality: Martin Yale has been around a long time and is famous for their durable, high-quality products. But, Fellowes, especially this model, is well-reviewed by consumers.
I plan to have one or the other ordered this week. I’ll post about it again as soon as I decide in case any of you are thinking you might do the same thing for someone you know this Christmas.
