Heavy duty automatic paper folders aren't just for large print houses. Smaller companies with folding needs are finding that the increased efficiency and savings of folding in-house can be pretty substantial. So what are some of the specs you should be aware of when you look for a new paper folder?
Folding speed: Look at both the sheets per hour and the sheets a given folder can take at one time. Smaller models do about 2,200 sheets per hour and larger models can get up to 8,000 or so sheets an hour.
Types of folds: Your unique folding needs may guide you to one paper folder or another. Most lower end folding machines handle a few of the standard folds such as the C-fold, typically used for letter mailings that need to fit in an envelope. When you get into the higher range models you will have more options for different folding styles and the ability to customize a folder to meet your needs.
Paper size: Less expensive paper folders will usually handle the standard 8-1/2 x 11 letter and sometimes legal size paper. If you will need to fold smaller or larger papers, make sure you get the model that handles a wider range of paper sizes.
Paper weight: If you are dealing with marketing pieces or other paper that is sometimes heavier than normal, make sure that you have a folder that can handle it. The low end folders will not work on heavier paper weights.
Right angle folding: Right angle folders allow you to fold paper twice: once horizontally and once vertically. Manufacturers' descriptions will explicitly state if a particular model can do right angle folding.
Extra features: You might want additional goodies such as batches, totaling functions, test sheet folding, error alerts, and automatic plate adjustments. The manufacturers' description will let you know the additional features on a given folder.
